Life on the Streets: Homeless in Pioneer Square

A few years ago I was looking to challenge myself as a photographer.  I tried to imagine a difficult subject and circumstance when I realized that I didn’t need to look any further than my own backyard.  It was the early part of the twenty-first century and I was living in Pioneer Square, Seattle: kind of hip, definitely seedy.  Everyday I passed by an almost invisible population–invisible because of the drugs and alcohol, the squalor, and the but-for-the-grace-of-God harshness of life (literally) on the streets–and I decided to open my eyes and take them in.  Here are a couple of images from the series and you can take a look at the complete photo essay and see how much or little things in Pioneer Square have changed since then.
